"Cite the software, not the paper" is apparently considered best practice

Zenodo seems to be the suggested venue for this.

typically it is easier done than said since requires merely to toggle a switch on zenodo. Unfortunately in my case I can't update the listing of github repos

and hopefully would finally resolved some time soon. So if you would like to enable for future releases -- please go ahead. We might later improve it by adding CITATION.cff .

This is still somewhat complimentary to the paper to describe it, e.g. in JOSS which would attest to "maturity" and "quality of practice"

I've enabled github integration, but I'll leave this issue open to remind myself to add Concept DOI to the readme after the next release.
