How to switch to drawing with a new material?

After I add and define the properties of a new material, how do I switch to drawing with that? I have a new one selected in the materials, but it's still using the same opacity, etc. as the other voxels I'd already drawn.

Also, what options do I have to find this stuff out? I keep having basic newbie questions, and I feel like I should RTFM, instead of asking over and over, but I don't know where the manual is. Can someone link me to the user guide?

Materials are assigned per layer, not per colour. On the layers panel you will find drop-down menu letting you select the material.

I'm afraid there is no manual. At least none that I know of.

I don't understand why that would be a layer specific thing, and that doesn't make any sense to me that it is. Why isn't it just: define a material, click on it in the materials list, and it draws in that material until you click a different one in the list?
