Is your feature request related to a problem? Please describe.
Windows Defender SmartScreen on my company issued laptop prevents me from opening the portable app. The "Open anyway" option is not available on our systems.

Describe the solution you'd like
It seems one reason this happens is because the executable has "Unknown Publisher". Perhaps adding a publisher is enough? I'm not sure what else would make the exe trusted.

Describe alternatives you've considered
Changing the SmartScreen strictness is not possible on this system. Neither is installing the official app normally. I might be able to get around that, but the option of a portable app is more appealing to me.

I had this issue as well. But I do not know how to add this publisher... I'll try to poke around...

But, to install it anyway, you can install it with the PortableApps menu.
To do so, install the portableApps Menu from here: https://portableapps.com/suite
Then, you can click on Apps > Install paf.exe and look for the zotero portable package downloaded from my repo.

I'll keep this issue updated.

I made some search on different sites and forums, and I'm sorry, but I don't think I can do anything. I'll try to contact John @ portableapps to end this beta and make zotero an official portableapp. But I have close to no hope since it has been +2 years and I still don't have any news from him.

You can also try unblocking the installer first by right clicking the file - Properties - General - Unblock. All files downloaded from internet will be on blocked state by default, not just Zotero Portable.

And about unknown publisher, it's already there on the executable properties. Microsoft just can't verify the publisher (PortableApps.com) because the installer doesn't come with "Digital Signature" (correct me if I'm wrong), and making one would require money which must be renewed every X year(s). Kinda pricey and unecessary for most open source project.

Wow. I didn't know about this "unlock" option.

I will edit the readme.md to add a link to this solution. Thanks a lot.

Regarding the signature, yes, beta/alpha programs do not have the digital signature. I guess portableapps.com adds it when it is an official package. John never answered me when I asked for official Zotero support. Until he does, I can't get that signature.
