Please provide an api to set DEBUG logging level programmatically in addition to JULIA_DEBUG environment variable

I am a newbie in Julia and I find logging api is very lacking comparing to other programming languages such as python, ruby. I have not been able to find how to set "DEBUG" log level in programmatically.

** Please Add a mechanism which enable DEBUG level in code or if there is a way which I am missing, please document it.**

You can do ENV["JULIA_DEBUG"] = MyModule to set it to log for calls under MyModule, or to all to log for every module. Likewise, if you set it to nothing, logging will stop. This is also mentioned in the manual, though that text should be expanded a little to document how this actually works. Seems like it just didn't get documented in #32432...

In case someone wants to pick this up, here is the doc file in question and here is how that environment variable special cases certain values and extracts the modules to log. The linked function returns true or false depending on whether or not the environment variable contains a module or not (or is filtered out).

Thank you for the detailed response. I do no know why the debug log level is clearly cut out from other predefined labels. Why can't we set it like any other log level such as info, warning etc. but have to fiddle with the environment variable inside or outside? I generally do not want to see the debug statements of other packages but the code I am developing. I really do not get it.

We might need to make the docs more clear about what "file" means in this context, as it works like this:

$ cat warntest.jl 
@debug "HI"

$ JULIA_DEBUG=warntest ./julia warntest.jl 
┌ Debug: HI
└ @ Main warntest.jl:1

That's exactly what I mean with "we need docs here", since that would already conflict with a module called warntest as well :/
